What is the MUNDA BIDDI TRAIL?
The Munda Biddi Trail is an off-road โฐ cycling route in Western Australia ๐ฆ๐บ running for over 1000 km’s from Mundaring to Albany – the longest trail of its kind in the world.
The only other comparable in size, is the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (4455 km) from Canada down to the south of the US. But this isn’t a dedicated trail, it’s a route. Maps are available, but it’s not a trail per se.
The name โMunda Biddiโ means path through the forest in the Noongar Aboriginal language and is built through a largely undeveloped natural corridor. The Noongar are a constellation of peoples of indigenous Australian descent who live in the south-west corner of Western Australia, from Geraldton on the west coast to Esperance on the south coast.
The Munda Biddi trail runs through vast areas of unspoiled forests ๐ณand bushland with mostly gentle terrain. The climate allows for good riding conditions year-round. But considering I’m setting off at the beginning of November, I expect it to get a tad hot ๐ค
There are free campsites ๐ (huts) at various points along the trail, some with more than a dayโs ride between them. Detailed maps of the trail are available. I’m taking such maps.
The trail is run by the ‘Munda Biddi Trail Foundation‘. A not-for-profit organisation which was formed to assist the Department of Environment and Conservation and other land managers get the trail project off the ground. The foundation continues to be involved in trail development and planning, including managing volunteers.
As for me ๐ต I’ll be riding the trail in November and December. Bush fire season is approaching ๐ so I’ll be keeping an eye-on Parks and Wildlife website, as they’ve an alert system available.
